Danielle Belen & Friends in Visalia
Thursday, June 28, 7:30 pm

Program:

Ms. Belen and Ms. Jung will open the show with American composer John Corigliano's tonal and romantic Violin Sonata from 1963. Unlike much of Corigliano's later work, this composition is immediately accessible and melodically fulfilling, playfully high-spirited at times, exquisite and lovely at others. David Requiro will perform several short, charming cello pieces based on folk songs written by 20th Century composer Sulkhan Tsintzadze.

The highlight of the evening is Edward Elgar's remarkable Piano Quintet in A Minor, Opus 84.  Many of Elgar's devoted followers consider this to be is his crowning achievement as a composer. It is so many things at one time--expansive, almost symphonic, animated, eloquent, mysterious, contemplative. Yet it is also profoundly one thing, profoundly human, a magical half hour of musical poetry.
